Program Overview

Beyond JAPAN Zero to X is a program designed to nurture entrepreneurs and leaders who will drive the next generation of innovation and contribute to Japan's growth strategy. The Filmmaker Course is designed to provide aspiring international film and video creators with the necessary input needed for global expansion while simultaneously offering output catered to industry needs.

Programs are tailored to specific roles in the industry with the highest priority being achievements of individual goals and results that lead to the next step. With the program taking place at the starting point and the final destination of film and entertainment, Los Angeles, the program will give participants realistic experience of the industry.

Mentoring from Japanese and U.S. mentors who lead the film industry, as well as seminars and sessions by various professionals in the U.S. are provided. We also support the building of a foundation for overseas expansion by arranging networking opportunities and meetings with local industry professionals.

The Beyond Japan Program and the Japanese government subsidizes program-related expenses for the purpose of nurturing the next generation of creators and content production. The program covers the cost of approximately 3 weeks of local stay and program-related expenses free of charge.

(Participants are responsible for handling the cost of their own flight(s) )

Coaching, field experience and networking directly related to successful in America

  • Mentoring by U.S. and Japanese mentors

  • Hollywood-level dialect coaching

  • Hollywood-level acting coaching

  • Introductions to local industry members

  • Networking, etc.

Targeting the global market, we support in providing the know-how necessary for co-production and genuine network-building

  • Mentoring by U.S. and Japanese mentors

  • Group coaching sessions 

  • Industry-specific seminars and sessions

  • On-site filming set experience

  • Introductions to local people in the industry /shadowing

  • Networking events, etc.

Application Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old at the time of applying

  • Agree to be listed as a program participant on program website and other related publicity materials

  • Must be able to commit to traveling and staying in the U.S. for the duration of the program

  • Be willing to act outside of Japan or has the intent to be involved in international level co-productions in the future

Eligibility

  • Can play English-speaking roles and are willing to take on new challenges

  • Have a role you are interested in playing overseas

  • Must have experience being in a commercial film, television or stage production in Japan.

  • Have an international co-production (feature film, short film or drama series) project that you are interested in making a reality

  • Must have directed/produced at least one feature film in the past
